Did you know that Taco salad recipes originated in the state of Texas and that they are basically a combination of ingredients from two different cultures and peoples.
When the Mexicans moved north into Texas they brought their unique menus along with them. The new mixture of different cultures created new recipes and one of these was the taco salad.
This blend of new recipes has been dubbed as Tex-Mex Cuisine.

don't be surprised if you see a taco salad in China with noodles or one
in Australia with kangaroo meat.
They aren't meant to be the same.
To prepare a taco salad at home, you just need a few ingredients. You can add almost any of your favourite vegetables to satisfy your personal tastes. Usually some form of cooked meat, some shredded cheese, a can of beans and either sour cream or guacamole are used as a topping.
If you are a vegetarian, you can omit the meat and just add more veggies like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, etc.
This is one recipe that is nearly indestructible by even the worst cook. You can mix your favourite ingredients with taco seasoning and still call it a “taco salad”!

Tex-Mex food is the mixing of Texan with Mexican ingredients. Queso (melted Velvetta cheese with chips) is a good example of a Tex-Mex dish.
The founder of Taco Bell, Glen Bell, watched the popularity of the taco salad rise and added it to his menu. The first year the taco salad sold in a Taco Bell store was 1962 in Downey, California.
According to a 1968 magazine, the main ingredients to a proper taco salad recipe were ground beef, chopped onions, chili pepper, salsas, lettuce and tortilla chips.
Other meats can be substituted for ground beef such as: ground chicken or turkey, diced left-over roast beef or pork, diced left-over roast chicken, even ground wild game.
The Giant Taco Salad soon evolved and it included all the original ingredients PLUS refried beans, guacamole, and more cheese and sour cream to create a huge plate of food. The calorie content for this dish can add up to 800 or 1000 per dish.
