How to Prepare Leeks
for Salads or Cooking

Knowing how to prepare leeks for a salad or for cooking is important.

As leeks grow, dirt, grit and chemicals can easily become trapped in the numerous layers. These need to be removed for safe consumption.

Leeks are a spring vegetable and are a member of the onion family.

They are quite mild but yet have all the nutrients of the onion family.

To begin to prepare the leeks, trim off the dark green top and the butt end and discard.

Before washing, we need to prepare to cut them.

Cut the remaining stalk in half lengthwise.

Flip the halves over onto their flat side.

Next, slice thin slices all the way along the stalk, using a sharp serrated knife.

To prepare the leeks for washing, use your fingers to break apart the leeks slices.

Put all the leeks slices into a sink of water (or a bowl of water).

Swish the pieces around to loosen any dirt. The dirt, etc. will fall to the bottom of the sink or bowl.

Use a slotted spoon to remove the leeks from the water, into a colander.

Allow the leeks to drain before use.

Now you know how to prepare the  leeks so that they are clean and can be used in a salad or added to soups and stews.
