With all the e-coli around today it is important to know how to wash head lettuce. Just follow my picture tutorial below and you will have clean lettuce for your family and friends.
This method to wash a head of lettuce is quick and easy.
Step 1
Remove the outer leaf from the head and discard it. This one will have the most contaminants and is probably wilted anyway, so we don't need to wash it.
Step 2
To wash between the layers of the head we need to access them.
Using a sharp serrated knife, insert it at a slight angle close to the core.
Step 3
Continue maintaining that angle and carve around the core.
Step 4
Remove the core and discard it.
You will now have a hollow section inside the head which leads to all the leaf layers for the wash part.
Step 5
To wash the head, fill this hollow section with running cold water until it comes out from between the layers and runs into the sink.
This will wash out any dirt and residual pesticides from between the layers.
Step 6
The wash part is now over - so turn the head over and place it in a colander to drain.
Leave the head drain for about 1/2 hour.
This is the simplest and easiest way to wash a whole head of iceberg lettuce.
