How to wash Romaine lettuce before making that Classic Caesar Salad

It is always safest to learn how to wash Romaine lettuce since we never can be sure how any produce is handled or what was sprayed on it.

Just follow my pictorial guide below for the quickest and easiest way.

Step 1

  1. Choose your head of Romaine with as few blemishes as possible.

Step 2

  1. Remove the outer leaves, if blemished.

Step 3

  1. Cut off the top, about 2", and the butt end, about 2".
  2. Discard all these parts, as we don't need to wash them.

Step 4

  1. Trim off any other blemishes or pink areas.
  2. Discard these also.

Step 5

  1. Gently pull all the Romaine leaves apart and submerge them in a large bowl of cold water. (A clean sink of cold water will also work.)

Step 6

  1. Remove the leaves by the handful and holding them upright, give them a bit of a shake to remove any excess water.

Step 7

  1. Place the Romaine leaves in a colander to drain.

Step 8

  1. Place the leaves on paper towels or a clean kitchen towel, and pat dry.

Step 9

  1. Now we are ready to cut our Romaine.
