How to Dice Red Onion
A Step by Step Process

This guide for how to dice red onion will be handy for many salad recipes, all throughout the year. Red and yellow onions are mostly interchangeable in the recipes. Red is most often used for it`s colour effect.

Step 1

  1. Chop both ends off of the red onion and discard them.

Step 2

  1. Lightly score down one side from top to bottom - just deep enough to penetrate the second layer.

Step 3

  1. Using your knife, peel back this layer along with the outer skin.
  2. This also removes the slimy under layer. You don't want to dice those parts

Step 4

  1. Slice the red onion in half from top to bottom.

Step 5

  1. Lay one half of the red onion, cut side down, on your cutting board.
  2. This is the beginning of the "slice & dice".

Step 6

  1. Holding the red onion securely, shave thin slices, beginning at what was the top, and working along to the end.

Step 7

  1. Keeping the slices gathered, rotate the pile, so that you can slice crosswise, to dice the pile.

Step 8

  1. Slice across the red onion slices to create a dice.

Step 9

  1. You will now have a nice pile of diced onion.
  2. If you need more than this - dice up the other half - if not, store the other half in a sealed bag in the refrigerator.
