How to Cut Green Onions
for a salad or garnish

Learning how to cut green onions or scallions quickly and easily is important in nearly all salad preparations. You also want to be sure they are clean.

Step 1

  1. Choose your bunch of onions or scallions carefully. Avoid those with lots of slimy stalks.
  2. Remove any decayed stalks

Step 2

  1. Remove the elastics or bands from the bunch of green onions.
  2. Rinse thoroughly under cold running water.
  3. Be sure to rinse the insides as well and then hold upside down to drain.

Step 3

  1. Place the green onions on a few paper towels and dry them off.

Step 4

  1. On a clean cutting board, and using a serrated knife, cut off the dried ends to create an even line up.
  2. Discard the dried ends.

Step 5

  1. Now you are ready to cut your scallions/green onions for a salad.
  2. Using your short serrated knife, cut thin strips across the bunch, while holding the bunch together with your other hand.

Step 6

  1. Cut only as much as you will need. A little goes a long way.
  2. Wrap some damp paper towel around the butt end of the remaining green onions, seal them in a plastic bag and refrigerate.
