How to Chop Iceberg Lettuce
just like the pros

You want to know how to chop iceberg lettuce or head lettuce like a pro? Just follow the easy step by step guide below.

  1. Choose a heavy solid lettuce head to chop, with as few blemishes as possible.
  2. Peel off the outer leaf and discard it. You do not want to chop that leaf because it is wilted.
  3. Place the lettuce on a clean cutting board and have your 2 knives ready to chop.

Step 2

  1. DO NOT Use the "wacking method" to remove the core. You will only bruise the lettuce leaves in the process.
  2. Using the serrated long bladed knife (such as a bread knife) chop the head into 2 roughly equal halves.

Step 3

  1. Chop any blemished areas off and discard.

Step 4

  1. Using the short knife - chop out and remove the hard core and discard it.

Step 5

  1. Now you have this section of the head lettuce ready to chop.

Step 6

  1. Flip one half over onto it's flat side.

Step 7

  1. Using the long serrated knife, chop off a portion of the end of the head.

Step 8

  1. Chop this portion lengthwise.

Step 9

  1. Then chop this crosswise into edible sizes.

Step 10

  1. Continue to chop the remainder of the half head, into relatively thin slices.

Step 11

  1. Your pile of lettuce slices should look like this.

Step 12

  1. Roughly stack these lettuce slices or gather them closely together.

Step 13

  1. Cross chop these slices to achieve edible sized pieces of lettuce.

Step 14

  1. You now have perfectly cut pieces of iceberg lettuce

Step 15

  1. Fluff your lettuce pieces and break apart, any solid chunks, by hand.
  2. Your lettuce is now ready to be used in a salad.
  3. You have now learned to chop lettuce like a Pro.

You can continue to chop the remaining half head of lettuce or you can store it in a plastic bag (preferably a vegetable bag) in the refrigerator.
